The business or entrepreneurial mindset may not be dominant among the Nair community but is certainly prevalent among the Christian and Muslim communities. The Nairs have been traditionally a 'service' community right from the days when they were considered a warrior class.
Why single out the Malayali? Neither is Infosys nor TCS nor Satyam in spite of their international status forged ahead in originality. They are content in taking on the work others dole out. Why is it that they cannot invent new software like Oracle, SAP or Microsoft? Why are they happy in just securing BPO business?
In a country where people are averse to taking risks it may be difficult for the average Malayali to go against the perceived notion that business is bad. While there is no lack of opportunity the Malayali is certainly crippled by lack of exposure to knowledge, trends and technology.
Like you mentioned the Malayali is quick to grab an opportunity but only if he is aware of it. The government can play a seminal role in fostering entrepreneurship here through EDPs. - Satish
